Can mold grow in a dry desert climate like Las Vegas?

Yes. Mold grows readily in Las Vegas, even though the outdoor air is famously dry. Mold does not feed on the desert outside your walls, it feeds on moisture inside them. Swamp coolers, slab leaks, burst pipes, monsoon intrusion, and condensation behind drywall create the damp, organic conditions mold needs, and the regional humidity has very little to do with it.

The dry climate is a comfort, not a shield. Spores are present in every building everywhere, harmlessly, all the time. They bloom into a colony only when they find a wet surface to feed on. In a desert home that wet surface is almost always created by a localized indoor moisture source, not by the weather. That is why mold is a regular, documented problem across the valley, from Summerlin high-rise condos to slab-on-grade homes in North Las Vegas.

What mold actually needs, and what it ignores

Mold needs three things to colonize: moisture, an organic food source, and time. Most of a modern home is organic food, from paper-faced drywall to wood framing to the dust on a surface. Time is short, mold can begin to establish on a wet organic material within roughly 24–72 hours of it getting wet. So in practice the only variable a homeowner controls is moisture, and indoors in Las Vegas that moisture is supplied locally rather than by the climate.

This is also why the surface looking dry proves nothing. The cruel part of trapped moisture is that the visible surface dries first while the cavity behind it stays soaked. A wall can read normal to the eye and the hand while the framing inside it sits at a moisture level that mold is happily feeding on.
