What mycotoxins actually are

A mycotoxin is a toxic secondary metabolite: a chemical a mold produces that is not essential to its basic growth but gives it an advantage, often by discouraging competing microbes. The prefix “myco” means fungus, and a toxin is simply a poison of biological origin. So a mycotoxin is, plainly, a fungal poison.

It helps to keep three things separate, because they are often blurred together. The mold is the living organism, the visible colony growing on a surface. The spores are the reproductive units mold releases into the air, the way a plant releases seeds. The mycotoxins are chemical compounds some molds produce, which can be carried on spores and fragments or left behind on the material the mold grew on. Removing visible mold does not automatically remove every trace of these compounds, which is exactly why proper mold remediation is about controlled removal and verification, not just wiping a surface clean.

Two points cut through most of the confusion. First, not all mold produces mycotoxins, and even the molds that can will only do so under certain conditions. Second, the presence of a toxin-capable mold is not the same as a measured, harmful dose of toxin in your air. Which molds produce them, and why “toxic mold” is a loose term

Several common indoor molds are capable of producing mycotoxins under the right conditions. The one most people have heard of is Stachybotrys chartarum, the greenish-black mold popularly called “toxic black mold,” which can produce a class of mycotoxins called trichothecenes when it grows on chronically wet, cellulose-rich materials like paper-faced drywall. Other genera, including some species of Aspergillus and Penicillium, can produce their own mycotoxins as well.

The phrase “toxic mold” is worth handling carefully. No mold is toxic to touch the way a live wire is dangerous, and the color black does not by itself mean a mold is producing toxins. Plenty of harmless molds are dark, and Stachybotrys does not always produce mycotoxins.
