The five molds you are most likely to see at home
Cladosporium
The most common indoor mold of all. It shows up as olive-green to brown or black spots on damp drywall, painted surfaces, fabrics, and around window frames where condensation collects. It is one of the few molds that keeps growing in cooler conditions, so it turns up in closets, basements, and behind furniture on exterior walls.
Penicillium
Blue-green and fast-spreading, Penicillium loves water-damaged materials: wet carpet, insulation, wallpaper, and anything that stayed damp after a leak. It is a frequent reason a room smells musty after a slab leak or a roof drip that was never fully dried out.
Aspergillus
An extremely large family with many appearances, from gray-green to yellow to white. It grows readily on building materials, dust, and food, and it is one of the most common molds found indoors anywhere in the world. Because it has so many forms, lab identification is the only way to know which Aspergillus you are dealing with.
Alternaria
Dark green or brown with a fuzzy, velvet-like texture. It favors consistently damp spots: showers, tubs, around sinks, and under leaking windows. It is also the most common mold to enter a home from outdoors, so seasonal spikes are normal in a desert valley after monsoon weather.
Stachybotrys chartarum
The greenish-black, slimy-looking mold popularly called “black mold.” It needs sustained, heavy moisture and grows on high-cellulose materials like paper-faced drywall, cardboard, and wood that has stayed wet for days. It is less common than the others precisely because it demands so much water.
Aureobasidium & others
Pink-to-black Aureobasidium often appears on caulk, grout, and painted wood around windows and showers. You may also meet Trichoderma, Mucor, and others. The list is long, but the response is the same for all of them.

Why you cannot identify mold by looking at it
It is tempting to play detective with a phone photo, but color and texture are unreliable. “Black mold” is the clearest example: several harmless or ordinary molds are dark, and the truly toxigenic Stachybotrys can look almost identical to common Cladosporium on a wall. A black spot is not a diagnosis. Many genera also change appearance depending on what surface they are growing on and how old the colony is, so the same mold can look green in one spot and black in another.
This is why guessing the species is the wrong first move, and why credible identification happens under a microscope, not over a countertop. The honest professional answer is to find the moisture, define the affected area through a proper mold inspection, and only sample for lab identification when a result will actually change what you do next.
