What is water extraction?

It is the urgent first step of water damage restoration: get the bulk water out fast, then dry the structure that the water soaked.

People often picture extraction as the whole job. In reality it is the opening move. Pulling the visible water out protects flooring, framing, and subfloor, and it dramatically shortens everything that follows, but the water that has already wicked into wall cavities and down into the slab is what does the lasting damage. Extraction removes the puddle. Drying removes what the puddle left behind. Both have to happen, in that order, and both have to happen quickly.

What water extraction actually means

Extraction is the mechanical process of getting liquid water out of a space and out of the materials holding it. When a pipe bursts or a flood pushes water across a floor, that water does not sit politely on the surface. Within minutes it soaks into carpet and pad, wicks up drywall, and runs along the path of least resistance into rooms you may not even realize are affected. The job of extraction is to chase that water down and pull it out while it is still liquid, because liquid water can be physically removed in a fraction of the time it would take to evaporate the same volume.

Mind the electricity. Do not walk into standing water near outlets or appliances. If water is anywhere near your electrical panel or wiring, stay out and let a professional handle it.
Lift and move what you can. Get rugs, furniture, and valuables up off a wet floor if it is safe to do so, which limits how much soaks in and what gets stained.
